Seniors who are living by themselves may have feelings of isolation, depression, and loneliness without having someone to interact with on a daily basis. Some family members hire senior care professionals to act as a companion for their elderly loved one, as well as someone who will be able to offer as much help with daily tasks as the elder is in need of. Another excellent way to boost the senior’s mood is to take a trip to the zoo or aquarium.

June is National Zoo and Aquarium Month. It is the perfect opportunity to get your loved one out of the house and explore the world outside of their home by going to the zoo and aquarium. If the senior has physical or mental challenges that could affect their trip, being prepared is key.

With these tips, you, your aging parent, and their home care provider will be able to have a stress-free experience that you can all enjoy.

  1. Look for discounts. Most zoos and aquariums will offer some senior discount on admission. There may also be discounts available if you or the senior have a membership card. Do your homework to discover what savings will be available to your elderly parent.
  1. Use a mobility device. Zoos and aquariums will most likely require a large amount of walking. For older adults who are not healthy or mobile enough to handle these walks on their own, bringing a walker or wheelchair is a great idea. If they do not normally need a mobility device, bring one along just in case your loved one’s feet need a break.
  1. Check wheelchair accessibility. Before bringing the wheelchair, make sure the zoo and aquarium is wheelchair accessible. Call the office to find out what obstacles may be challenging for your loved one as they are using the mobility device. Also, find out if there are special designated areas during the animal shows where someone with a disability will be able to sit.
  1. Have a plan. Chances are there will be several types of shows and events throughout the day. Find out what times they are in order to come up with a plan for the day. Also, check with your loved one to determine what shows they want to see and which ones they want to skip.

Do not let physical limitations stop your senior parent from going to the zoo and aquarium. Instead, follow these 4 tips in order to better prepare yourselves for the long day.
