Recognizing Potential Dental Problems in Your Elder Loved One
December 19, 2016

Once most adults get older, physical activities may not be a priority to them. Also, if they live alone, they may not be paying close attention to how healthy the foods and drinks are that they are consuming on a daily basis. These two factors, along with a slower metabolism, can quickly cause older adults to become obese.

Not only can this condition cause your senior loved one to feel sluggish and lethargic, but it can also rob them of their cognitive abilities. Making the following lifestyle changes are critical in order to prevent obesity from happening to your parent, but they may not be motivated to do it alone. With the encouragement and support from family members and a senior care provider, they will be able to easily make the following changes.

Exercise more. Seniors with chronic pain, such as arthritis, may use that as an excuse to not exercise. However, by not working out, the weight they will probably gain will actually put more pressure on their joints and muscles. Exercising can help strengthen their bones and muscles, while also improving their flexibility and balance.

Get a physical therapist. A physical therapist can analyze your loved one’s health and fitness level in order to create an exercise program that caters to their abilities. This program will not go beyond your loved one’s physical abilities in order to help prevent injuries from occurring.

Weight training. One type of exercise the senior should squeeze into their day is weight training. The senior should get the approval of their doctor before participating, but this type of workout will help the elder lose weight, build muscle, and increase their metabolism. In order to create a weight training routine that is right for them, the senior should consult with their doctor, physical therapist, or trainer.

Count calories. It is important that older adults carefully watch how much they are eating at each meal. Even increasing their calories slightly can cause them to pack on the pounds. This can also lead to other health problems as a result of their weight gain. Eating a well-balanced diet with plenty of lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will keep their weight at a healthy level. They should consult with a dietician for a more specific meal plan.

Just because your loved one does not have the energy or motivation they once did, this does not mean they will be unable to try these tips. Encourage them by making these changes with them.
