As a family caregiver you know that there are many different elements of caring for your senior that you must address in order to help them stay safe, healthy, and comfortable, and live the quality of life that they desire and deserve.

One that you may not immediately think of but that is very important is caring for their skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body, and as elderly adults get older they experience changes in their skin that can leave them suffering health problems and more vulnerable to further issues and complications. Properly caring for your parent’s face can help them to feel more confident and comfortable in their appearance, but also guard them against serious health issues.

Use these tips to help you care for your parent’s face:

• Protect against the sun. Protecting your parent’s skin from the sun is not just something to think about during the summer months. Be sure that they are wearing sunscreen and guarding their skin with a wide-brimmed hat any time that they are out of the house. This can help them avoid sunburn as well as reduce the risk of skin cancer.

• Exfoliate. Gentle exfoliation helps to remove layers of dry, dead skin, aiding in cellular renewal. This makes their skin more comfortable and healthier.

• Avoid harsh products. Avoid skin products for your parent’s face that contain harsh chemicals, particularly those with terms such as “peel”. These can be much too hard on your parent’s skin, even causing burns and other irritation. Stick to gentle cleansers and exfoliators.

• Moisturize. Elderly skin is dryer and thinner than that of younger people. Replacing lost moisture comforts your parent’s skin and also helps to keep it more resilient and healthier. Look for high quality moisturizers that do not list water as a main ingredient and that do not contain harsh colors or fragrances.

Starting senior homecare for your aging parent can be one of the best decisions that you can make for them throughout the course of your caregiver journey for them. A senior homecare services provider can be with your parent on a customized schedule to ensure that they get all of the care, support, assistance, and encouragement that they need as they age in place. Through a set of highly personalized services tailored specifically to your aging parent’s needs, challenges, and limitations, this senior homecare services provider can help your parent to stay healthy, safe, comfortable, and happy while pursuing a lifestyle that is as independent, active, and engaged as possible throughout their later years.

When it comes to helping them keep their skin healthy and safe, this care provider can support your parent in fulfilling their personal care needs, such as effective bathing, and support good lifestyle choices such as regular handwashing and moisturization. As a family caregiver this can give you peace of mind knowing your senior can live a high quality of life when you are with them and when you are not.
