Dealing with Parkinson’s Disease

Senior Male with Parkinson's DiseaseParkinson’s Disease is a disease that primarily impedes movement and speech. This slow, progressive disease may strike anyone between the ages of 50 and 60 and sometimes even earlier.

It is a disease that affects more than 10 million people worldwide and although treatments are available for this disease, it currently has no cure. Thus life may be challenging for those who have Parkinson’s Disease or for those taking care of someone who has it.

But below are some tips that may help you or your loved one cope with the difficulties.

If you or someone you know has Parkinson’s or you suspect being affected by the disease:

  • Immediately seek medical attention and find the right doctor once you notice the symptoms. The earlier you do this the better.
  • Follow the prescribed medication as well as scheduled doctor appointments.
  • Do not hesitate to seek support from services suggested by your hospital. Ask your health care provider, doctor, or nurse if in case you do not remember or understand any medical term or instructions.
  • Do pleasant activities and manage stress as much as possible. Exercise is a suggested activity (but please consult a doctor first).
  • Find more information about the illness (symptoms, treatments, disease progression) to help cope with Parkinson’s.

If you are a caregiver of someone with the disease, then below are some suggestions that can help (the above tips also apply).

  • Keep track of your loved one’s activities, doctor appointments, and medication.
  • Allow your loved one to participate and complete their daily activities that you help them with like getting themselves dressed.
  • Help maintain your loved one’s quality of life and offer your continued love and support that will help him/her cope with the challenges of having the disease.
  • Do not do everything at once and set attainable goals.
  • Give yourself time to relax and continue to meet with friends. Find someone you can talk to that would offer you support as well. Doing these would make you feel re-energized and nurtured.
  • Caring for a loved one with Parkinson’s is challenging. Do not hesitate to hire someone to assist you if in case you are feeling overwhelmed and unable to fully do so.
