Home » Classic Movies Your Parents and Teens Will Bond Over
You need a way for your teens and your parents to bond. Have you considered classic movies? Everyone enjoys a movie on a rainy. While your parents probably watch plenty of modern movies with your teens, how about introducing your teens to some of your parents’ favorite movies.
Here are some recommendations to get you started.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Audrey Hepburn stars as Holly Golightly, a country bumpkin turned party girl who wants nothing more than to live a life of luxury. A new neighbor intrigues her, but they both hide secrets that could impact their growing fondness for each other. This is a romantic comedy that appeals to all ages with plenty of humorous moments to keep some of the subject matter from being too heavy.
My Fair Lady
The musical My Fair Lady also stars Audrey Hepburn. In this movie, she’s a low-income Cockney woman with a very heavy accent. Professor Henry Higgins accepts a dare from his friend Colonel Pickering to turn this woman into a true woman of high society. There’s a good message about how changing yourself to fit the ideals of others isn’t always what’s best for you.
The Quiet Man
John Wayne starred as an American boxer who travels to his family’s home in Ireland after killing another man during a boxing match. There, he meets and falls in low with an Irish woman whose brother wants nothing more than to own the homestead John Wayne’s returned to claim. Family bonds and disagreements are a strong focus in this movie.
Rebel Without a Cause
James Dean’s portrayal as a frustrated teen is the goal of Rebel Without a Cause. In the opening, he’s taken to the police station for being drunk in public. There he meets a couple of other teens with similar backgrounds. He starts hanging out with those same teens and getting into additional trouble that leads to devastating consequences. Teens will relate to some of the issues he faces in this movie.
West Side Story
West Side Story is one of the classics that teens will get. It’s focused on racial disputes between Puerto Ricans and greasers. When one of the greasers falls in love with a young Puerto Rican woman, tempers flare. The movie is a take on Romeo & Juliet, so teens may find that general plot to be very familiar.
