Home » Innovative Ways in Some States Are Making Aging at Home Easier
Aging at home is a reality may senior citizens embrace. Being in a familiar area near friends and family is important for your well-being. To aid with the desire to age at home, some states are coming up with innovative ways to assist older adults with the goal to age at home.
Shifting From Single-Family Homes to Multi-Unit Housing
Michigan is opting to change zoning laws so that more multi-unit homes fill the landscape. Some cities in Oregon are creating mixed-age communities, too. The goal is to have seniors, families, and singles living in the same neighborhoods where they can rely on each other for help when needed.
For example, working parents may find it useful to have an older neighbor who is willing to watch the kids on snow days. In return, those parents can shovel an older neighbor’s sidewalks.
Building More “Accessory Dwelling Units”
Some states look at the number of older adults in need of caregivers and developed a plan. Homes that accommodate seniors and their caregivers are popping up. Caregivers live in one area of the home. Seniors have a private home to themselves, but the caregiver is close by if help is needed.
In Santa Cruz, California, programs similar to Habitat for Humanity help older homeowners get an addition without having to cover the cost of the construction. In other states, planning departments are making it easier to get building permits for an accessory dwelling unit.
Creating Age-Friendly Businesses
In cities like Boston, businesses are shifting attention to the things they can do to help community members. Restaurants encourage older adults to get out and enjoy all that the city offers with large-print menus, brighter lighting, safer bathrooms, and wider shopping aisles. The goal is to make sure seniors feel just as comfortable outside of their home as they do at home.
Adding Senior-Friendly Fitness Equipment in Parks
To make it easier for elders to get enough exercise, cities are adding equipment in playgrounds and parks that are ideal for seniors to use. In addition, many cities are adding paved or boardwalk paths that are suitable for wheelchair and walker users.
If your parents can’t drive, they still have ways to get out and be active. Many cities are focusing on becoming walkable with wider sidewalks and more crosswalks. Caregiver services also help your mom and dad get out, exercise, and enjoy socialization. Talk to our caregiver agency to find out more about services and pricing.
